Formal is a type foundry based in Bucharest, Romania, established by two designers with an obsession for systems and typography—its structure, rhythm, and meaning. We believe typography is not just about shapes, but about order.

Our work lives in the tension between discipline and play: rigour gives us direction, and play keeps us alive. We design within rules only to see where they might twist—and reveal something unexpected.

Radu Manelici

Radu Manelici

Romanian designer (b. 1985) working at the intersection of multiple fields, with a keen interest in the processes behind visual language. Radu graduated in 2008 from the Bucharest National University of Arts, Design Department, where he has been teaching since 2009.

His work spans various branches of design, including product, editorial, and type design. His work generally exhibits his appeal for systems and grids, which he uses to build designs and organise content.
